Ottumwans have just over a week to nominate an outstanding member of the community for the 2014 Gene Schultz Award.
Before passing away a few years ago, Schultz dedicated his life toward making Ottumwa a great place to live. Each year, the award in his name is given to someone who embodies the same selflessness and passion for Ottumwa as Schulz.
"We're looking for somebody that volunteers, not only with their own groups but with other groups here in the community," said Tim Kurtz, Director of the Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce. "People that are not selfish, but just give back to the community and that's what Gene Schultz was all about."
The deadline to submit nominations is January 17 and you can pick up the forms at the Chamber of Commerce office in downtown Ottumwa.
The winner of the Gene Schultz Award will be decided by a panel of eight to 10 community members and will be announced at the annual Partners in Progress banquet on February 13.
Last year's recipient was John Hunolt, an Ottumwa resident for more than 30 years who volunteers with organizations such as the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity.
