Ottumwa City Council approves demolition for North Wapello Street building
At Monday night's Ottumwa City Council meeting, the council approved the low bid and awarded a contract for demolition for structures on the lot located at 414 North Wapello Street.
The contract was awarded to Tim Skinner Trucking and Excavation for a total price of $9,424.50.
The contractor will be required to do some separation on the two-story, brick building during the demolition.
"They'll remove the roof and remove some other items that do have to be landfilled," said Jody Gates, Director of Ottumwa Health & Inspections. "And then they'll take the brick portion of the building and take it to the landfill, but we'll be able to use them for the road base out there. So we won't actually have to landfill that. So this will take a little more time than a normal demolition might take."
One wall of the building is currently falling. On two separate occasions, portions of the wall have fallen into the neighboring yards.
