Ottumwa Family Drug Court honors graduates and alumni with movie
Saturday morning graduates and alumni of the Ottumwa Family Drug Court gathered together with their families at Ottumwa 8 Theatre to celebrate their completion of the program.
Nearly 150 guests showed up to see the movie Frozen, but most importantly to celebrate family and sobriety.
The Wapello County Drug Court was established in 2006 as an improved way to handle cases with substance abusers with children.
Bill Owens, Lead Judge of the Wapello County Family Drug Court, said he's seen substantial success in the program since it launched. The program currently has more than 70 percent completion rate.
"It's reduced the number of hearings that we hold where we sever parental rights between kids and their parents," said Judge Owens. "We've reduced those substantially over the last seven years so we're very confident that our program is successful and works."
Owens also said this event also provides an opportunity to give back to some of these families that can't afford to attend movies.
