About two months away from their annual MDA fundraiser, the Ottumwa Fire Department has something to be proud of.
Last year, OFD members raised the second-highest amount of money per member for their Fill the Boot campaign. That's out of fire departments across the state -- beating out much bigger cities.
Ottumwa Firefighters raised $15,000 over a three-day period. The department has been participating in the annual campaign for about 25 years.
"It makes us feel really good, we're a small community, but the community really sticks together and supports us, as well as the MDA charities," said Ron Klein, Master Firefighter and Coordinator of the Fill the Boot Fundraiser.
This year, firefighters will be filling the boot August 29-31. They'll be stationed at the five corners on Ottumwa's south side, as well as on Venture Drive near Walmart. The firefighters also host a chili cook-off in the fall, with all proceeds benefiting MDA.
For every dollar raised for MDA, 77% goes directly to research, services and education, 14% goes to fundraising and 9% to administrative costs.
Klein said the department looks to outdo themselves each year and hope to raise even more money this year.
