Ottumwa firefighters see firsthand that many kids are without coats and gloves. This holiday season they are taking the time to give back to the community, and help those in need fight the cold.
On Friday, Assistant Fire Chief Mike Craft and Firefighter Josh Chance dropped off over a dozen coats to Liberty Elementary School. Guidance Counselor Rick Tanner will distribute the coats to the students who need them.
The fire department was able to purchase the coats thanks to raising over $1,800 through various fundraising efforts.
â??Weâ??ll this is just one of the many schools in Ottumwa that we have donated coats to this just happened to have the most to be dropped off at, so we're dropping off the coats today, and we're giving hats and gloves with those coats making sure we keep those kids warm,â?? Chance said.
Chance says you can still donate to the fire department's Operation Sparky Claus until Dec. 20 at the Central Station.
