Ottumwa Fishing Derby to be held Saturday

Well it may not feel like spring outside but itâ??s supposed to be in the 50â??s this weekend. And this is perfect weather for the 3rd annual DNR Trout Release and Fishing Contest at the Ottumwa Campground Pond on Saturday.

The Iowa DNR will be stocking the pond with 2,000 Rainbow and Brick Trout and the fishing derby will start at 10 a.m.

In order to participate, you must have a fishing license and a trout stamp. For those under the age of 16, you must have a parent present or have a fishing license and trout stamp.

â??The DNR is going to tag about 200 trout with a yellow tag so if a fisherman catches a fish with a yellow tag they can bring it up to the command in control center and they'll get a prize for the tagged fish. And they're also going to have several trout theyâ??re going to stock in the four to eight pound range so there's going to be some big ones in there,â?? said Gene Rathje, Ottumwa Parks and Recreation Director.

Rathje said the past two years have been very successful and he expects around 200 people to participate this year.
