Ottumwa High School recognizes freshman students for good academic performance.

Around 130 kids packed the gymnasium this afternoon for a pizza party, which included two bounce houses as well. Associate Principal Steve Zimmerman says this celebrates students who missed two or less days of school and achieved a C-minus or higher first semester.

??This is the second year of doing this, and we asked students what they would like to do, and this is what they came up with,?? he said. ??In the spring, we'll do a bowling outing as well and recognize the students that they've done a great job, and we appreciate it as a staff, administration and high school.??

Zimmerman says getting the word out will incentivize more students to attend this event in the spring. Those who didn't make it to the pizza party spent class time getting additional help on homework.
