Ottumwa installing bulldog statues
The City of Bridges will look more like a City of Bulldogs soon with the help of some local high school students. The Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce teamed up with members of the Ottumwa High School to create the organization called, "MOB" which stands for "Making Ottumwa Beautiful."
The group wanted to add art to the community and considered sculptures and murals at other cities across the country. They decided on decorating larger than life size bulldogs. The city plans to have eight of them decorated and on display, but for right now the only one is at Huston Field. The bulldog is painted to be in a softball uniform, and even has painted toenails and bright red lipstick.
"MOB" founder and Ottumwa High School student Madyson Feather says it is exciting to see the first bulldog put up.
"It's honestly kind of inspiring to just think that we came up with this idea and it's actually happening," Feather said. "It inspires hope that we can begin to do bigger and better things and actually accomplish them."
Six other businesses and organizations will have their dogs on display by early August, according to Main Street Executive Director Bob Untiedt.
