Ottumwa man awaiting murder trial faces more felony charges
OTTUMWA, Iowa —
An Ottumwa man set to stand trial for First-Degree Murder this spring is now facing additional felony charges.
In November of last year, police say Venhure Tsegay, 19, robbed and shot Christian Madueno, 16, in the face. The Ottumwa teen died a month later.
On Thursday, Tsegay was charged with First-Degree Robbery and Burglary in connection to an incident reported in October 2015. According to online court documents, Tsegay and his accomplices forced entry into a home on Minnesota Street in Ottumwa, struck a victim in the head with a pistol and stole multiple items from their home.
So far, Tsegay has waived his right to a preliminary hearing for the additional charges.
Tsegay is scheduled to face a jury for the murder charge on March 6, 2018. If convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence in that case.
