An Ottumwa man has been charged with cruelty to animals after police find way too many dogs living in his home.
Ottumwa police executed a search warrant at a residence on North Sheridan Wednesday evening.
Animal Control Officer Jeff Williams told KTVO they found 21 dogs "living in squalor."
The owner of the home is Mark Teater, 44.
Teater surrendered 17 of the dogs voluntarily to the Heartland Humane Society and was allowed to keep his four favorites.
The warrant to search the home was obtained after an ongoing investigation.
On Thursday, Teater was charged with three counts cruelty to animals, one count sanitation of premise and one count number of animals restricted.
He was released on citation and his court date is set for June 17.
Williams says all of the animals will need to be shaved and cleaned, as they were living in such bad condition.
The Heartland Humane Society will be handling that for the next few weeks, then the dogs will be available for adoption.
