An Ottumwa man will spend decades in jail for attempted murder.

In May, Johnnie Lee Boutchee, 54, was convicted on six charges, including Attempted Murder.

Earlier this week, a judge handed down Boutchee's sentence, 40 years.

The sentence essentially consists of 25 years for the Attempted Murder charge and an additional 15 years for Willful Injury.

The lesser sentences for the remaining charges will served concurrently.

Online court documents show that last December, Boutchee assaulted his girlfriend with a knife.

Boutchee also punched his roommate in the head and knocked him unconscious with a baseball bat.

Iowa law requires that Boutchee serve at least 70 percent of his sentence.
