Ottumwa man pleads guilty to murder

Brandon Seim

An Ottumwa man charged with First Degree Murder has pleaded to a lesser charge.

According to Iowa Online Court Records, 21-year old Brandon Joseph Christopher Seim entered a guilty plea on Feb. 3 to one count of Murder in the Second Degree.

Seim was arrested in November of 2011, after Ottumwa Police found 34-year old Andy Madren at an address on Division Street in Ottumwa suffering from multiple stab wounds. Madren died shortly after being transported to the hospital.

The maximum penalty for Murder in the Second Degree is 50 years in prison. The plea deal allows Seim to avoid the mandatory life sentence he could have received if convicted of First Degree Murder by a jury.

Seim is scheduled to be formally sentenced on April 28.
