Ottumwa man shot in broad daylight

One man was hospitalized after being shot Thursday morning during what police believe was a dispute between two gangs.

Joel Enrique Herrarte, 16, was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for treatment of his injuries and later released.

The first call came in at 10:43 a.m. as a report of criminal mischief.

Two vehicles' back windshields were smashed out with baseball bats.

At 11:23 a.m. a second call came in regarding the shooting of Herrarte. The shooting occurred at 1110 Second Street. Upon arrival, officers found Herrarte had been shot and suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police said Herrarte was shot with a .357 semi-automatic handgun, which was found and seized by police behind the residence. The incident appears to be the result of an ongoing problem between two Ottumwa gangs culminating in the shooting.

Following an initial investigation, Emmanuel Lopez, 16, of Ottumwa and Lorenzo Langarcia,16, of Ottumwa, have been charged with Attempt To Commit Murder " Joint Criminal Conduct.

Attempt To Commit Murder is a Class B Felony, and both juveniles are being held in the Wapello County Jail.

Additionally, Jairo Rodriguez, 16, of Ottumwa, and Antonio Echeverria, 23, of Ottumwa have been charged with Riot .

Rodriguez was transferred to an area juvenile detention facility while Echeverria is being held in the Wapello County Jail. Riot is an Aggravated Misdemeanor.

Additional charges and arrests in the incident are pending.
