Ottumwa police comment on teen sex abuse case
We have an update regarding an Ottumwa teen facing serious sex abuse charges.
According to an affadavit obtained by KTVO, Kraigen Grooms, 17, of Ottumwa knowingly committed a sex act with a 1-year-old female child.
The defendant videoed himself committing the crime. Police say the incident occured in April at an apartment on the 300 block of W. Keota Street. We caught up with Ottumwa police Chief Tom McAndrew this afternoon to find out how the teenager was linked to this explicit video.
"Investigators found out the subject was from Ottumwa," Chief McAndrew said. "We used pictures that we had of the suspect to identify him and based on those photographs they did appear to be the same subject so the investigation went from there."
The police chief said the defendent's family has been very cooperative through the entire process. Police also explained how the investigation likely got to the federal level.
"We received information from a concerned citizen that the subject in the video looked like another subject from here in Ottumwa, so we started an investigation," Chief McAndrew said. "We were also contacted by the Department of Homeland Security who said that they had information. They probably got a call from the same concerned citizen saying that they believed the subject in the video was from Ottumwa."
Grooms is currently in custody being held on a $100,000 cash only bond. Due to the seriousness of the crime, he is being charged as an adult. A preliminary hearing for Grooms will be held thursday morning at 10 a.m. If found guilty, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
