Ottumwa prepares for southeast Iowa's biggest trout-fishing event
OTTUMWA, IOWA —
The City of Bridges is getting ready for the biggest trout-fishing event in southeast Iowa.
On Saturday, March 24, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will stock the pond at the Greater Ottumwa Park with 2,000 rainbow and brook trout.
Parks and Recreation Director Gene Rathje says they’re hoping to see somewhere between 200 and 300 anglers at the event.
“The fishermen love it. They buy licenses, they buy trout stamps and they come to Ottumwa from the surrounding counties and surrounding area to fish. And, they will be stocking some larger fish in the four to eight-pound range, so that seems to attract even more anglers,” Rathje said.
Prizes will also be given out for the biggest trout caught. The event begins next Saturday at 11 a.m.
