Ottumwa School Board candidates answer questions from residents

The Ottumwa League of Women Voters held an Ottumwa School Board Candidate Forum Thursday evening

It was a crowded room Thursday night at the Ottumwa School Board Candidate Forum put on by the Ottumwa League of Women voters.

With the school board election coming up on September 10, there are three seats up for grabs with current board president Carol Mitchell running for re-election.

Along with Mitchell, board candidates Michael Burton, David Howard, David Weilbrenner and Torey Young answered questions from the audience.

One such question was if they would have voted for or against The Laramie Project from being performed at Ottumwa High School.

â??Anytime a student has an issue with being bullied or might possibly have an issue with that, I think the board needs to look at that and make sure that everything that they can possibly do to make that better or make our children feel safer should be done. And I think that things could have gone differently for that decision,â?? said Matt Dalbey, Ottumwa resident.

Those that showed up said they wanted to make sure that the school board and who the public elects has a good representative view of all the students in the district.
