Ottumwa Schools superintendent explains process of snow days
Students typically look forward to snow days around this time of year, but it's actually quite a process for a school district to cancel classes due to inclement weather.
Ottumwa Community School District Superintendent Dr.Davis Eidahl says school officials are paying attention to the forecast each night to determine if they need to send people out the next morning to survey the roads in the district.
â??Beginning at 4:30 in the morning, we're on roads, and we're determining stopping distance and speed, things like that, and it's a decision that's made not only with several people internally in the district, but we also communicate with districts that are surrounding us, and we talk to them about their roads also,â?? Dr. Eidahl said. â??It's quite a collective decision,â??
Although classes do not start until 8:15 a.m., Eidahl says school officials try to make an announcement by 5:30 in the morning. Of course you can always count on KTVO to update you with any school closings and delays.
