Ottumwa teacher out after having sex with student

Jose De Jesus Ortiz, Jr., 26, of Ottumwa/Wapello County Sheriff's Office

An Ottumwa High School teacher has been arrested for having sex with a student.

According to online court documents, Ottumwa police officers arrested 26-year-old Jose De Jesus Ortiz, Jr., at Ottumwa High School Wednesday.

Ortiz was charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee, a class D felony.

Court documents say Ortiz ‘showed a pattern…or scheme of conduct to engage in sexual conduct’ with a student enrolled at the high school.

In the criminal complaint, both Ortiz and the victim admitted to having an extended sexual relationship.

Ortiz is in custody at the Wapello County jail on a $5,000 bond.

He pleaded not guilty Thursday, waiving his right to a preliminary hearing.

In a statement released at 3:30 Thursday afternoon, Ottumwa Superintendent Nicole Kooiker said Ortiz is no longer an employee with the district.

She added that the district will also provide counseling and support to any student who needs it.

“We can assure you we are doing everything to keep all our students safe and ensure situations such as these do not occur in the future,” Kooiker said.
