Ottumwa teacher sentenced to 120 days for sexual exploitation
OTTUMWA, IOWA —
A former Ottumwa High School teacher is now going to jail.
Jose Ortiz was charged with one count of Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee after he engaged in consensual sexual conduct with a minor.
On Thursday morning, a judge decided to sentence Ortiz to 120 days in the Wapello County Jail, plus a $625 fine and 10 years on the registered sex offender list.
This decision came after three people testified on Ortiz’s behalf, two of whom were former students.
Both students said Ortiz was a great mentor and role model to them.
Fourteen other students sat in the courtroom as well Thursday morning. Ortiz apologized to each of them in front of the judge, saying he regrets what he has done and how it has affected them.
