Ottumwans work together to fight hunger

Nearly 80 Ottumwans gathered Thursday night to take action against hunger.

Meeting under the banner of Growing Wapello Together, the group consisted of politicians, non-profit organizers and regular citizens.

Their goal was to come up with three actionable ideas to combat food insecurity in the county.

So what would those ideas look like? We put the question to project coordinator Amber Payne.

â??One of them might be improving transportation the route system looking at different modes of transportation on group suggested the a buddy system other groups are looking at community dinners or community meal sites,â?? said Payne.

Thursday nightâ??s meeting is designed to be a continuation of the process, not the end.

Payne hopes that more community members will come on board to help make sure that all Wapello County families have good healthy meals, and the group will need help with the next step, implementing their ideas.
