Ottumwa's First Presbyterian Church helps feed the food insecure
Ottumwa's First Presbyterian Church helps feed the hungry in Wapello County.
On the first Thursday of each month, a volunteer group sets up a food pantry in the church basement. They designate a shopper to each person who registers, and together they select food for his or her household. Items are purchased through the Food Bank of Southeast Iowa. The food is distributed based on a number of factors, including the number of family members, monthly income and whether or not they are on food stamps.
â??It's been amazing here. a lot of need, and there's a lot of different stories each month that some just got laid off or you know, they're just new to disability, some come in and say they have absolutely no income at all, so it's been an eye opener to all of us," Mary Flint, volunteer said.
The church is located at 288 W. Fourth Street in Ottumwa and the food pantry can always use donations.
