Ottumwa's historic 'Bridal Cottage' burns down

A little after 5 p.m. crews responded to a fire at the Bridal Cottage, located on the 200-block of Second Street in downtown Ottumwa./KTVO.

Just minutes after the Bridal Cottage in downtown Ottumwa closed at 5 p.m. Saturday, authorities arrived on scene to put out a fire.

What started off as just smoke grew to something much larger.

The shop, located on the 200-block of Second Street, was fully engulfed within the hour, it’s roof collapsed and is now a total loss.

The Ottumwa Fire Department worked to control the fire and make sure it didn't spread to nearby buildings.

Deputy Fire Chief Cory Benge told KTVO no one was inside the shop when the fire began.

Its cause is still undetermined.

Crews have blocked off some of the streets surrounding the area as smoke continues to fill the air.

KTVO will bring you more details when they become available.
