Ottumwa's Jefferson St. Bridge set to open June 1
OTTUMWA, Iowa —
Ottumwa's Jefferson Street Bridge is scheduled to re-open a week from Friday.
Public works crews closed the busy intersection of Jefferson and Main streets about two months ago.
The project, which stretches along Main from Jefferson to Vine streets, includes major sewer and street repairs.
Public Works Director Larry Seals said the original sewer lines were built in 1880. He said the infrastructure's old age caused a few set backs.
Weather permitting, the street will be open to traffic June 1.
"It's been inconvenient for some, but the street has been open in front of all the businesses, and most of these businesses have back entrances, so it's not a real impact, other than drive-by traffic," Seals said.
Most traffic has re-routed to the Market Street Bridge. Despite the congestion, Seals said there have been few complaints about the two-month closure.
