Attention Heartland residents over 70 years old. Are you feeling weak or are you having trouble swallowing food? If the answer is yes, you should participate in a new study being held by Truman State University. If the answer is no, they would still like your data. The study is trying to find symptoms, frailty and tongue strength. The idea behind this study is to see if there is a correlation between weakness and swallowing function. Finding early indications of weakened swallowing can avoid bigger health complications later on and could even lead to malnutrition.
??If someone has a swallowing problem, they might start avoiding foods or not eat as much and both of those things can then interfere with the nutrients that they are getting with individual meals and without those nutrients, they have unintentional weight loss that can then promote other forms of illness,?? said Julia Edgar, Communication Disorder Faculty Member for Truman State University.
If you participate in this study, you will be rewarded with a $10 gift card and a free hearing test. If you would like to participate in the study, call Julia Edgar at (660) 785-4255.
