The Ottumwa/Wapello County Recycling Center kicks off a pilot program to encourage people to not only recycle, but to recycle more.
On Thursday morning, Recycle Center employees delivered 35-gallon blue carts with lids to select households. Last month, the Recycling Center sent out invitations to residents who live on select streets on Ottumwa??s Southside, and those who signed up got their bins today. If the program proves to be a success after six months of observation, city officials hope to make the larger carts available to all Ottumwa residents. The blue bins will replace current red bins, which are about half the size of the new blue bins.
??As part of environmental management system, we work to continuously improve six environmental areas and one of those areas is recycling and so were hoping by providing larger carts to see more recycling come in to the recycling center,?? Janice Bain, Wapello County Recycling Coordinator said.
Organizers say the program's success will be determined by comparing the weights of the recyclables collected in the larger bins versus the smaller bins
