Plea negotiations continue between prosecutors and an Otumwa teacher accused of sexual misconduct.

Jose Ortiz, Jr, 27, was scheduled to be in a courtroom Wednesday for a pretrial conference.

Ortiz is facing a felony charge of Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee.

On Tuesday, a defense request to delay the hearing for six weeks was granted.

In court documents, the defense cited ongoing plea negotiations as one reason for requesting the delay.

The possibility of a plea deal first came up in September.

Court documents don't indicate what the terms of a plea deal might look like.

Ortiz was arrested in April after the school district discovered an ongoing sexual relationship between the Ottumwa High School Spanish teacher and a student.

Court records show that Ortiz and the student have admitted to the consensual relationship.

If convicted, Ortiz faces up to five year in prison.
