Plea possible in Ottumwa teacher sex case
Ottumwa, Iowa —
A former Ottumwa teacher accused of sexual misconduct may be preparing to enter a plea deal.
Jose Ortiz, Jr., 26, is charged with one count of Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee.
According to court documents, the pre-trial conference for Ortiz was held on Wednesday.
During the conference, the parties agreed to a continuance.
The reason... ongoing plea negotiations.
Ortiz pleaded not guilty in June.
But in court documents previously reviewed by KTVO, both Ortiz and the victim admitted to having an extended sexual relationship.
Court records don't indicate how likely a deal is at this time, or what the terms might be.
The maximum penalty Ortiz could face if convicted is 5 years in prison.
The next scheduled court date for Ortiz Nov. 15
