Police put brakes on suspected car thief

Ottumwa police think they have solved a local car theft and burglary case.

Investigators said on the morning of Tuesday, November 22, 2011 the Ottumwa Police Department received a report of a burglary and a theft of an auto that had occurred at Martz Auto located at 965 South Vine Street in Ottumwa.

That stolen vehicle was located in Ottumwa on Wednesday morning.

On the evening of November 23, 2011, members of the Ottumwa Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence located at 222 East Woodland in Ottumwa.

As a result of the search warrant, property taken during the burglary was recovered.

Ottumwa police arrested and charged James Pleas Surber, 20, of Ottumwa with 3rd-degree burglary, 2nd-degree theft and 3rd-degree criminal mischief .

Surber was also arrested on outstanding arrest warrants out of Wapello County for probation violation on a original charges of 3rd-degree burglary and assault with a weapon.

Surber was also arrested on outstanding warrants from Davis County for probation violation for the original charge of 3rd-degree burglary and 1st-degree theft.

Surber is being held in the Wapello County Jail on $10,000 bond.
