Poppies benefiting military members to be sold in Kirksville
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. —
With Memorial Day around the corner, one organization is doing its part to let freedom ring.
Saturday, May 20, the Kirksville American Legion will celebrate Poppy Day.
The poppy symbolizes freedom as well as the blood sacrificed by troops during the war.
Handmade poppies will be distributed by the Auxiliary in exchange for contributions.
Funds raised will then go to active-duty military men and women, veterans and their families.
The money also helps purchase wheelchairs, specialized equipment at veteran clinics and covers transportation costs to and from doctor visits.
Poppy Day will run from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Saturday.
The flowers can be purchased at a number of local stores in Kirksville, including Westlake Ace Hardware, Walmart and J.C. Penney.
