Public comes out for Ottumwa Police Chief meet and greet

The new Ottumwa Police Chief will likely be name next week, but first there was a public meet and greet with the three candidates for the position at the Bridge View Center Thursday evening.

The three candidates are interim chief Tom McAndrew, Lawrence McNaul and Jeff Jirak of Wilton.

Each one had five minutes to introduce themselves to the audience.

For the Ottumwa City Council, City Administrator and HR Manager, naming the next Police Chief will be a tough decision.

â??Weâ??re looking for the best possible person to take the Police Department to continue and work on a higher level as far as just providing as much service as you can to the public in a manner that's citizen friendly and stressing to protect and serve the people. We want to make sure we're a good public service and that we have a united team to serve the public to the best of our capabilities,â?? said Joe Helfenberger, Ottumwa City Administrator.

Interviews will be conducted Friday at the Ottumwa City Council Chambers with each candidate.

The new Police Chief will likely be named next week.
