Putnam County sex suspect convicted of 12 crimes
A northeast Missouri man accused of sex crimes against children was found guilty on a dozen counts this week.
Kenneth Shumate, 33, of Unionville, Missouri, was convicted during a nearly three-day bench trial in Gentry County, where his case was heard on a change of venue from Putnam County.
The case was prosecuted by John Young of Mercer County, with assistance from the Missouri Attorney General's Office.
Young said the judge found Shumate guilty of 12 of 15 charges.
The defendant was convicted on one count of sexual exploitation of a child, two counts of statutory rape and nine counts of statutory sodomy.
Shumate's sentencing is set for 2 p.m. October 25, 2013, in Gentry County Circuit Court.
Young said Shumate could face up to life in prison related to his conviction on the statutory sodomy charges.
Shumate's crimes against kids came to light in October 2012 when the Kirksville Regional Computer Crimes Unit began an investigation into the downloading of child pornography.
