Itâ??s Independence Day and you know that means--freedom, food and fireworksâ?|but what about 5k races?
The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri held the second annual Firecracker 5k/1k walk in Kirksville this morning. The race started at the Dukum Inn and the course took runners all over downtown. Over 200 runners and walkers participated and streets were lined with friends and family cheering them on.
â??The point is to create awareness and to help feed hungry people,â?? said Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri Regional Coordinator Susan Dublin. â??There is no better day than the Fourth of July to bring everybody out for a festival.â??
The race was followed by a medal ceremony and a parade. Proceeds from the event will help to benefit the food bank and organizers say todayâ??s race should bring in almost $10,000.
