Reading a book while staying cool

The late summer heat wave in the Heartland is keeping people indoors and looking for ways to stay cool.

The Adair County Public Library in Kirksville saw an increased number of people Tuesday.

With how hot it has been, parents and kids are coming to the library to substitute outside afterschool activities with reading, checking out books and surfing the internet.

Library officials say they aren't surprised since this usually happens every summer, but not this late in the season.

"Summer just in general brings this due to the heat and more people are off. Now with school starting, it's quiet in the morning and gets busy after school. Today it has been very busy after school," said Librarian Gina Rybkowski.

Everyone is welcome to come by the library during regular business hours to read a book in an air-conditioned area.

The Adair County Public Library is opened Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
