Relaying for a good cause

Jefferson Countyâ??s Relay for Life started Saturday at noon and runs until midnight at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

Relay for Life raises funds for cancer research and cancer patients.

25 teams ranging from six to 15 members participated in the relay. Every team member is asked to try their best to raise $100. Only an hour into the relay, $60,000 had already been raised.

Participants had various reasons for becoming involved in Relay for Life.

â??And I do this for theseâ??my grandchildrenâ?? I have more but thatâ??s why I relay because I donâ??t want my grandchildren to ever have to hear the words â??you have cancer,â??â?? said Kortney Heald, the chair for Jefferson County Relay for Life.

Healdâ??s granddaughter was hard at work selling homemade hair clips and scarves in which the profits were being donated to Relay for Life.

It was a carnival-like atmosphere with music, games and fun for everyone.
