Ribbon cutting officially welcomes community to Leadership Academy building

The newly renovated building in downtown Ottumwa will be headquarters for the Ottumwa Leadership Academy.

If there is ever a beacon of hope for the potential of downtown Ottumwa, it's the Ottumwa Leadership Academy's new headquarters located at 113 E. Main Street.

The academy's alumni, future participants and members of the community braved the heat Tuesday afternoon to cut the ribbon in front of the newly refurbished building, officially opening the building as headquarters of the program.

For those who saw the building in its "before" stage, the transformation is hard to believe.

"They are in awe of how great it looks," said Hollie Tometich, Executive Director of the Ottumwa Leadership Academy. "It's very urban, yet it's very down to earth at the same time, so it's very functional. And so we're getting a lot of oo's and ah's and can't believe there's something like this in downtown Ottumwa."

The Leadership Academy graduated its first class of 18 participants in June and it has 24 community members signed up for the program's second session that begins in September.
