There are more than 1,200 amateur roller derby leagues worldwide and there is one in Kirksville, Missouri called NEMO ViQueens! Roller Derby is a full contact sport thatâ??s growing in popularity.
â??Roller Derby is an actual game going on, you don't just skate,â?? ViQueens member Amanda Tarrant said. â??You are trying to get points each team has a jammer and those are your point scorers. The jammers are trying to past the other opposing team members and for the people the pass they rack up points.â??
In Roller derby, two teams of five members each roller skating in the same direction around a track. The jammer wins a point for every opposing player that she passes. â??It takes a lot of endurance and you get beat up a lot but itâ??s a lot of fun,â?? Tarrant said.
You do have to sign a form and have insurance to play roller derby. The team practices Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Leisure World. â??You can expect to have some fun,â?? Tarrant said.
