Routine traffic stop ends with child endangerment charges
Ottumwa, Iowa —
A routine traffic stop leads to an Ottumwa man being charged with Child Endangerment.
Yu Shein, 49, was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with Operating While Intoxicated and three counts of Child Endangerment.
The charges stem from a traffic stop on September 18, 2017.
According to court records, Shein was pulled over just after 9 p.m. that evening at the corner of Highway 34 and Iowa Avenue for a burnt out taillight.
The arresting officer suspected Shein was intoxicated and noticed three minor children in the vehicle.
Shein consented to a breathalyzer test at the scene, but the result was inconclusive.
A urine test later determined that Shein's blood alcohol level was .197.
That is more than twice the legal limit.
Shein has pleaded not guilty and has been released on bond.
If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison on each of the Child Endangerment counts.
