The League of Women Voters of Ottumwa held their first legislative forum of the year this morning.
We caught up with Senator Mark Chelgren to discuss the legislative session's progress.
Chelgren said the biggest item they've been working on is reducing pension tax for veterans or retired service members.
He said there's still plenty he would like accomplish this year.
"Well there's quite a few important things to do," said Chelgren. "We still have a lot of tax reform issues that need to be dealt with. We have some infrastructure funding issues that we're dealing with. And one of the things I'm working on personally is legalizing the sale of fireworks in Iowa and using the proceeds from the taxation on that to help local fire departments."
Chelgren said he's disappointed by the session's slow start and wants the focus to shift from election preparation to serving the people.
