Four adults and three kids escaped safely from their burning home in Ottumwa Friday evening.

Four adults and three kids escaped safely from their burning home Friday evening.

It happened just before 6 p.m. Friday night at 621 South Sheridan St. in Ottumwa.

The home, rented by Mark Riley, is a total loss.

The Ottumwa Fire Department told me flames were coming out the front door and three windows when crews got there.

One of the residents told firefighters the electric lift chair in the living room was completely engulfed in fire when she walked into the room. Smoke detectors alerted the family to the blaze.

Investigators say the cause is still under investigation, but it was possibly electrical in nature, starting somewhere near the recliner.
