Thu, 05 Jun 2014 16:49:57 GMT — The Des Moines County Sheriff's Department's newest addition to its fleet of vehicles is going to stand out. The Hawk Eye reports the department has taken ownership of a 46,000 pound armored vehicle through a U.S. Department of Defense program that transfers surplus vehicles and equipment to local law enforcement agencies. Sheriff Mike Johnstone told Des Moines County supervisors on Tuesday that he expects some people to question the need for the giant vehicle. Johnstone says it could prove essential is cases such as standoffs with armed people, when the vehicle could provide protection needed to retrieve a wounded person. Johnstone says the vehicle is worth about $700,000. It cost the county $3,000 to transport the vehicle from Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Burlington.
