Slick roads cause multiple accidents in Ottumwa

A collision on Jefferson Street was just one accident that slowed traffic Monday morning.

The cold temperatures and slick roads proved to be disastrous for drivers in Ottumwa Monday. The snow, slush and ice caused several accidents around town, including two severe accidents on both Ottumwa's open bridges early in the morning.

Two cars were totaled after a collision on the Jefferson Street Bridge and another car flipped over just minutes later on the Wapello Street Bridge.

When the temperature dips below freezing, the bridges always freeze first and drivers need to be especially cautious when crossing.

"Be cautious, allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and drive slow," said Sergeant Becky Martin of the Ottumwa Police Department.

Sergeant Martin said there were at least six accidents reported around town before noon on Monday, most of them due to a combination of frost and icy streets.

In addition to driving especially careful, be sure your car is also completely cleared of all frost and snow before taking the road.
