Small businesses play important role in Kirksville economy

Small businesses are an important part of the city of Kirksville, and one group is working to bring more to the area.

The Missouri Rural Enterprise and Innovation Center is helping out these businesses.

The center works with new businesses and with those that are interested in starting one.

Small businesses often offer different and unique items that cannot be found in the 'big box stores.'

Those businesses also help to give back to the community. That is because employees often live in the area, and they participate in different service organizations. However, when a small business in the area does close, it is important to find another to fill the vacancy.

"When a businesses closes that's been in our community for awhile and is not replaced, that's a loss to our quality of life," said Dan Hamlet of the Missouri Rural Enterprise and Innovation Center.
