With wintery conditions in the weather forecast this weekend, it's important for Ottumwans to abide by the city's snow emergency ordinance when in effect.
The ordinance is enacted in cases of a heavy storm to give plow drivers a chance to clear the streets from curb to curb as quickly as possible.
"Our crews work very hard during these storms very often working straight through them in staggered shifts," said Ottumwa Public Information Coordinator Tom Rodgers. "So we encourage folks to pay attention--when you hear the snow ordinance is announced please come into parking compliance as soon as you can."
Special signs designate which roads are snow route, and no parking is allowed on either side of those streets until the emergency is lifted.
Penalties for violation of the ordinance include a ticket for illegal parking and possible towing and impoundment of vehicles.
