Southeast Iowa man sentenced for house fire
A southeast Iowa man has managed to avoid prison time for setting his own house on fire last October.
Jonathan Beam, 53, of Washington, was sentenced Friday to five years probation.
Beam had pleaded guilty to second-degree arson in January and could have faced up to 10 years in prison.
The judge also fined beam $1,000 and ordered him to pay court costs.
Police say Beam set his home on fire on October 1 of last year.
The home sits across the street from the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the County Jail.
No injuries were reported.
Beam was arrested in southeast Nebraska that same week.
Police say receipts in Beam's car showed he bought gas, flares and a torch the morning of the fire.
