St. Paul Lutheran to host blood drive in honor of Ottumwa student battling bone cancer

St. Paul Lutheran Church is located at 1524 N. Court Street.

A new venue will host a blood drive to honor a Horace Mann Elementary school student battling a form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma.

In March, Aiden Baumgartner's school hosted a blood drive in his honor. Now the church across the street wants to do the same thing. St. Paul Lutheran will hold a blood drive from 2-6 p.m. on Thursday. Both blood drives are organized by the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center in Ottumwa.

"We had one at the elementary school in March and collected about 74 donations for that drive, so it was a huge success in honor of Aiden, and St. Paul Lutheran Church had wanted to also do one in honor of Aiden, so now that those people who donated there are eligible, we're doing it again," Courtney Jones, donor relations consultant said.

The blood collected will next be distributed to local hospitals in Eastern Iowa, Western Illinois, Wisconsin and St. Louis. If you'd like to be a donor, appointments are encouraged, but walks-in are also welcome on Thursday. You can contact the MVRBC at 800-453-1097 to do that.
