The staff and administration at Davis County schools pulled together to help the family of one of their students.
In October, a kindergartner at Davis County Elementary fell and hit his head on the playground. When he was taken to the doctor, they discovered a tumor in his brain. That's when the fundraising efforts began.
Requests for donations were kept to staff-only, but amongst themselves, over $1,200 was raised along with many other items. Two families donated an entire Thanksgiving dinner and the fourth-grade staff donated a basket of laundry and house supplies.
Lynn Shumate, Davis County Elementary's school nurse, wanted to especially thank the employees at the local Shopko, who donated a Christmas tree. Davis County's kindergarten staff donated lights and ornaments for the family as well.
Shumate said the family has expressed their gratitude many times, but to her, it was just something the school community needed to do.
"I've never worked with this group of people, when we needed something, they haven't pulled together and stepped forward and done above and beyond," Shumate said. "So I knew they'd come through and they proved it to me."
Shumate said the little boy had surgery the Monday before Thanksgiving in Iowa City and was able to return home sooner than expected. The district is keeping their fingers crossed that they will be able to have him back in class before Christmas break.
