Strong storms strike southside business, church
Severe weather developed rapidly Thursday afternoon bringing strong winds, and leaving behind quite the clean-up across the Heartland.
One of the hardest hit areas was the South end of Kirksville.
Part of the roof from the U.S. Cellular building and other businesses on the South Baltimore Street plaza blew across the street into the property of Faith Lutheran Church and School.
"Yesterday just directly from the wind itself got some damage on our roof from a couple shingles being broken when the big gusts of wind came," said David Lukefahr, Pastor of Faith Lutheran. "In our front yard we ended up with the neighbor's, to the south of us, roof in our front yard. I mean there's some little damage to the lawn and brush underneath there, that's probably destroyed and some minor damage maybe."
Pastor Lukefahr said this is not the first time the roof from the U.S. Cellular building has caused damage to the church. He says in February 2012 another strong storm came through. That time the roof cause substantial damage to the church, costing them over $100,000 in damage.
Lukefahr says he's glad everyone's safe.
