Turnout was strong for Mississppi Valley Regional Blood Center's bi-annual media blood drive Thursday at the Bridge View Center.
In the first hour alone, 27 people showed up to donate. By the time the drive wrapped up around 6 p.m., around 80 donations had been collected.
In the summertime, blood centers typically see a 20 percent decrease in donations due to potential donors out of town on vacations or busy with summer activities.
If you didn't make it out to donate Thursday, there are ways you can still help.
"We have drives all over the community and all over our region all the time," said Courtney Jones, Donor Relations Consultant at Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center. "But you can always contact our donor center and come to the donor center and donate. We're open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and Friday mornings. So just give us a call and we'll find something for you to do."
Jones said first-time donors shouldn't be leery. The entire process is easy and actually giving blood only takes about seven to eight minutes.
