Summertime means a lot of free time for kids

Summer is just days away for many area students which means a lot of free time for kids.

If youâ??re looking for fun and safe activities for your children ages five to 12 to participate in, registration is now open for the Kids Summer Recreation Program in Ottumwa.

â??We have two sites, Wildwood Park and Memorial Park. And we accept registration down here at the Beach Ottumwa all the way until the program starts which is Monday, June 4. And it's a combination of a childcare, recreation program and educational program,â?? said Gene Rathje, Ottumwa Parks Director.

From bowling and swimming to bike safety, thereâ??s something for everyone.

â??They're going to go fishing at the lagoon, see if they can catch some trout we stocked earlier and things like that. On days when the weather isnâ??t that great, they can stay at the shelters and do arts and crafts and play games and there's restrooms right next to the shelters so it's just a great place to drop the kids off to spend the day from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The program runs starts June 4 and ends June 29. The hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Fridays. The cost is $15 per week or $40 for all four weeks.
