Tailgate-themed fundraiser to benefit Ottumwa youth baseball

Construction has begun on the new concession stand at Babe Ruth Park.

Though spring and summer sports season may seem far away, construction has begun on a new concession stand at Babe Ruth Park for Ottumwa's youth baseball leagues to use.

On Saturday, February 1, the day before the big game, the committee in charge of the renovations is holding a tailgate-themed fundraiser to benefit the Babe Ruth League.

"All the money raised is going to go to supporting Ottumwa youth baseball," said Holly Dommer, of the Securing a Better Baseball Future Committee. "And we're still in the process of building our new concession stand over in the Babe Ruth Park and we broke ground on that just a couple of weeks ago, so we're very excited that things are starting to move."

Tickets to the tailgate fundraiser are $25 a person and can be purchased at both Ottumwa Hy-Vee stores and at Duree By Schulz Studio. They can also be purchased the night of the event, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Ottumwa.

Dommer said the committee hopes to have the concession stand completed in time for spring baseball tournaments.
